 Details: p-Toluene sulfonic acid monohydrate
Para ??“ Toluene sulphonic Acid ( p.T.S.A)
( Monohydrate)
4-Methylbenzene sulphonic acid.
P- Toluene sulphonic acid is an employed in the casting sector as a hardener / catalyst for phenol formaldehyde resins and for furan resins which are used as binders for casting resins.
P- Toluene sulphonic acid has a particular advantage over mineral acid in that it is less corrosive and owing to its non-volatility does not evolve corrosive gases or fumes either in processing or in the finished product.
Starting product for syntheses.
P- Toluene sulphonic acid is used for wide variety of organic syntheses, e.g. for the manufacture of p-cresol, dyestuffs, tanning agents and pesticides. Its alkyl esters are good alkylation agents.
Esters of p- Toluene sulphonic acid are used in the mineral oil sector e.g. as lubricant additives.
Used of sodium toluenesulphonate
The sodium salt of p- Toluene sulphonic acid is used as a solubilizer, e.g. to increase the detergent action of polyphosphates,
To stabilize solutions and suspensions,
To increase the reaction rate in two-phase reactions,
In aqueous extraction s of organic products and to lower the viscosity of colloidal solutions.
Precaution
When handling p- Toluene sulphonic acid, the product must be prevented from coming in contact with the skin and eyes (protective gloves goggles and clothing must be worn).
Any clothing contaminated by the product must be changed immediately and any parts of the body splashed with the product must be rinsed quickly with plenty of water.
Package & Storage
P- Toluene sulphonic acid in falke form is packed in polyethylene sacks (content 25 kg).
P- Toluene sulphonic acid must be stored away from damp and light; it is neither destroyed nor its efficacy impaired by slight discoloration. Containers that have been opened must be carefully re-sealed.
Description
P- Toluene sulphonic acid in flake form is an ivory colored, crystalline, hygroscopic substance which dissociates almost completely to that of sulfuric acid. However, unlike concentrated sulfuric acid a concentrated solution of p- Toluene sulphonic acid dose not have an oxidizing effect.
P- Toluene sulphonic acid is readily soluble in water and lower alcohols, but less soluble in their acetic acid esters, in glycol ethers and ketones.
When p- Toluene sulphonic acid is heated to decomposition point, toxic fumes of sulfur oxide which entrain toluene are evolved.
Uses
P- Toluene sulphonic acid is used in three main application sectors: as a catalyst, as a starting product for syntheses and, when used in the form of the sodium salt, as a solubilizer.
Use as a catalyst
P- Toluene sulphonic acid is used for acid-catalyst reaction such as polymerization, alkylation, esterification, acetylation, transesterification, hydrolysis, etherification, actualization and dehydration.
Compared to strong mineral acids frequently offers an advantage in gentler, more selective reactions, thus favorably affecting yield, product color, and amount and type of residues.
P- Toluene sulphonic acid reach with certain secondary alcohols, e.g. cyclohexanol, and with tertiary alcohols in such a way that side reaction occur involving the elimination of water and the formation of corresponding olefins: isomerization or polymerization take place to a lesser extent.
P- Toluene sulphonic acid can be used in the manufacture of phthalic acid esters, polyvinyl acetate, alkyd resins, epoxy resins etc., and also as a catalyst in the alkylation of phenols with olefins.
P- Toluene sulphonic acid is also used in the paint sector as hardener , e.g. for acid ??“ curing phenol formaldehyde resins. In addition it serves as catalyst for aqueous plastic dispersions which can be crosslinked in acid medium.
