Story of Kava Kava Kava Kava (Piper Methysticum), also known as kava pepper, is an exciting botanical, it has been used in Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia in the South Pacific for over 3,000 years. Today, easing anxiety and creating a sense of peacefulness are the most common uses for kava. In Europe, Kava root extract is a commonly prescribed treatment for anxiety and nervousness. Modern research confirms its effectiveness. Kava contains "kavalactones" -- active ingredients that have been shown to produces physical and mental relaxation and feelings of well-being. And, in contrast to other "modern" anti-anxiety drugs, Kava does not cause the fuzzy mind or blurred thoughts! Theory The active ingredients in Kava roots, kavalactones, act as a mild central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) depressant by enhancing binding of a certain neurotransmitter to its receptor in the limbic (mood and emotion) portion of the brain. Safety Kava kava may potentiate the effect and toxicity of consuming alcohol, and the two should not be taken together. Taking kava kava in beverage form for long periods or in great quantities leads to a reversible skin condition, as well as possible liver compromise (also reversible, in this case). Kava kava should not be used as medication for anyone with a serious anxiety or depressive disorder and one should consult one's physician if taking any medications before taking Kava kava. Pregnant or lactating women should never take supplements without a doctor's instruction. Although not found to be toxic when taken alone, long-term studies have not been conducted with this supplement. Since relaxation is a rather qualitative measure, it is difficult to glean concrete results even when a study is well controlled. Regardless, several human studies have been performed and they show that subjects taking Kava kava on a regular basis for 1-6 months reported improved mood and outlook, and decreased anxiety and tension. Perhaps the most impressive results came from a study that demonstrated equal psychotropic improvements between those taking 100 mg kava extract containing 70% kavalactones, and those taking prescription benzodiazepine. |
